________________ (xviii) the world. In the wake of the industrial and technological revolution, feudalism yielded ground to capitalism; imperialism raised its banner with its mission of economic and political colonialism; and to challenge these forces, a strong communist movement sprung up. But, all these conflicting ideas and thoughts lacked the basic moral capacity to endure. The two world wars destroyed imperialism and made capitalism acquire a more benevolent approach towards the deprived ones. The once powerful communist movement, which held out hopes of a just and equitable social order to satisfy the material needs of man, has also been found to be disintegrating. The one major fallout of all ideas and movements has been the upsurge of all pervasive materialism, which, in its turn, has led to the steady and gradual degeneration of human values. The overall picture today is one of strife and stress; conflict and tension, an unbriddled race for material acquisition through fair or foul means; a total disregard of human values; and a thickening climate of violence. The causes for all these malignant symptoms lie deeper in our mind and thought. Even religion has also been found to be failing to raise us and make us better and noble. In fact, it is meant to enable us to achieve the larger good-the good of society, of our country, and of humanity. But, their disciples and the people have often used religion to promote bigotry, narrowness, intolerence and fundamentalism. In the name of religion thousands and millions have been killed and every possible crime has been committed. We have forgotten our great teachers like Lord Mahavira and Buddha, Christ and Muhammad and even Mahatma Gandhi. Therefore, Jainism does have its relevance as a religion which emits powerful ideas as a perenial source of nourishment and development of human mind, Even though not widely spread out, one cannot ignore its contribution to the enrichment of our culture, particularly in the field of literature, architecture and sculpture. In another area, where its contribution can be significant is the preservation of environment. We are today greatly concerned about the threats to the very survival of the world because of our ruthless exploitation of nature. Jainism stands for the protection and preservation of all living beings, even insects, fruits and flowers. Any effort in this direction will strengthen our efforts to protect and preserve our fragile eco-system. Today, Jainism has a mission, a purpose and a message, not only for India but for the entire world. I do hope that the deliberations of the seminar will result in a positive and sustained endeavour towards this goal. On this note, I inaugurate this Conference, wish it all success, and thank its organisers. Jain Education International For Private & Personal Use Only www.jainelibrary.org
