ભાગવતના પાંચમાં સ્કલ્પના ત્રીજા અધ્યાયમાં આવે છે. આ ગષભદેવ ભરતના પિતા થાય છે, કે જેના નામથી ભારતવર્ષ નામ પડયું કહેવાય છે. ભાગવતની કથા અનુસારે કષભદેવ સાક્ષાત્ વિષ્ણુના અવતાર હતા. આથી આગળ વધીને જોઈએ તે વેદમાં પણ જૈન તીર્થંકરોનાં નામો આવે છે. આ કઈ ઉપજાવી કાઢેલ નામે નથી, પણ ૨૪ તીર્થકરોનાં નામે માંના નામે છે, કે જે વિદ્વાન ઈતિહાસવેત્તાઓની શોધના પરિણામે તે સાબિતીઓ મળેલી છે.
ઉપરનાં પ્રમાણે ઉપરથી સ્પષ્ટ જોવાય છે કે વેદમાં પણ તે તીર્થંકરનાં નામે આવે છે, કે જે તીર્થકરોને જૈને દેવ તરીકે માને છે. અને અતએ એ કહેવું લગારે અત્યુ ક્તિવાળું નથી કે–વેદરચનાના કાળ પહેલાં પણ જૈનધર્મ અવશ્ય હતે.
Dr. Guerinot કહે છે–
There can no longer be any doubt that Parsva was a Historical personage. According to the Jain Tradition, he must have lived a hundred years and died 250 years before Mahavir. His period of activity, therefore corresponds to the 8th Century B. C.
