________________ Shri Mahavir Jain Aradhana Kendra www.kobatirth.org Acharya Shri Kailassagarsuri Gyanmandir and the colophon of the aforementicned conimentary Tunis as follows:__इति सारङ्गसुतवादीन्द्रशिष्यन्यायनिपुणतर्कविचारचतुरभट्टराघवविरचिते न्यायसारविचारे तृतीयः परिच्छेदः समाप्तः ॥ From these statements it is clear that Vádîndra was the preceptor of Bhatta Raghava and that Vádîndra's proper name was Mahadeva. He was also called 'Sarvajna' well-versed in all the shstras. ___Vadindra's date-Bhatta Righava, Vadindra's pupil, at the end of the aforementioned commentary gives the Saka year of its composition in the following verse: -- शके चतुःसप्ततिसंख्यके शतैः शताधिकैरभ्यधिके च पञ्चभिः । द्विघातितस्तत्र बभूव वत्सरः ध्रुवं विचारः परिसाधि राघवः ॥ Now this verse can be interpreted in two ways: -- 1 पञ्चभिः शतैः द्विघातितैः शताधिकैः अभ्यधिक चतुःसप्ततिसंख्यके शके ___ = 500 x 2 = 1000+100+74%= Shaka 1174 (A. D. 1252). 2 पञ्चभिः शतैः शताधिकैः द्विघातितः अभ्यधिके चतुःसप्ततिसंख्यके शके ___ =500+ 100 = 600x2= 1200+74= Shaka 1274 (A. D. 1352). The above two interpretations create a doubt as to the exact date of Bhatta Raghava. My learned friend Mr. T. M. Tripathi has provisionally accepted the second interpretation and fixed Bhatta Rághavá's date as A, D. 1352 relying on the circumstance that "Jayasimha stiri (who has also written a conimentary (about A. D. 1366) ou the Nyayasára of Blásarvjua) is described by his pupil Nayachandra-sûri (in his Hammira Kivya) to have defeated in a debate Saranga who was a great logician and who can be safely identified verse in the manuscript. But on going through the existing portion I found Vádindra referred to in the following passages: Ditto leaf 44 1 This is quoted by Mahimshopadhyaya Satischsndra Vidyibhusann M. A. Ph., D. in his Introduction to Bhásarvajna's Nyáyagára from a manuscript of Nykyasara-vichára in the Queen's College Library, Benares. 2 See M. N.
