लेता है, जैसे अधीर कायर पुरुष युद्ध में जाने से पहले ही वनादि में घुस जाने (छिप जाने) की इच्छा (इरादा) कर लेता है ॥३॥ शुष्कतर्कादिकं किञ्चिद्वैद्यकादिकमप्यहो। पठन्ति ते शमनदीं न तु सिद्धान्त-पद्धतिम् ॥४॥
भावार्थ : अहो ! इस प्रकार वैराग्य से सम्पन्न पुरुष शुष्क तर्कशास्त्र तथा वैद्यक आदि के ग्रन्थों का अध्ययन करते हैं परन्तु शमता (समता) रूपी नदी के समान सिद्धान्त-पद्धति को नहीं पढ़ते ॥४॥ ग्रन्थपल्लवबोधेन, गर्वोष्माणं च बिभ्रति । तत्वान्तं नैव गच्छन्ति प्रशमामृतनिर्झरम् ॥५॥
भावार्थ : दुःखविरक्त साधक ग्रन्थों का पल्लवग्राही (ऊपर-ऊपर से) बोध प्राप्त करके गर्व की गर्मी बढ़ा लेते हैं, किन्तु प्रशमामृत (शान्ति के अमृतमय) झरने के समान तत्त्व (अध्यात्म-रहस्य) को नहीं जानते या तत्त्वज्ञान हासिल नहीं कर पाते ॥५॥ वेषमात्रभृतोऽप्येते, गृहस्थान्नातिशेरते । न पूर्वोत्थायिनो यस्मानापि पश्चानिपातिनः ॥६॥
भावार्थ : ये सिर्फ साधुवेषधारी हैं, ऐसे व्यक्ति गृहस्थों से अधिक (बढ़कर) नहीं हैं। क्योंकि न तो वे पूर्वोत्थायी हैं,
और न वे पश्चात्निपाती हैं ॥६।। ५६
