________________ viii Preface compose works which appear to be written in one language only but which, when closely examined, reveal the fact that they are in some other language or languages, too. These compositions which supply us with illustrations of language-pun' ('bhasa-slesa ), include works known as “Sama-Samskrta". They are both in Sanskrit and in Prakrit at once. Bhavārivāranastotra (No. 405), a hymn composed by Jinavallabha Sūri, is of this kind, and its last ( 30th ) verse furnishes us with the terminology viz. “SamaSamskļia”. Samsara-davānala-stu'i attributed to Haribhadra Sûri (c. 700 A. D.-C. 780 A. D. ) is another instance. It is dealt with by me in Vol. XVII, Pt. 3 as No. 849. These two hymns along with the following, are noted by me in Paiya ( Präkrta) Bhasão ane Sahitya (p. 216 ) as specimens of "Sama-Saṁskrta" works: -- (1) Virastavana by Jayasekhara Sûri. ( 2 ) Jinastavana by Sahajasāgara in 28 verses. ( 3 ) Candraprabhajinastavana ( v. 11-12 ) by Jinaprabha Sūri in six languages. ( 4 ) Rşabhastavana ( v. 25-28 ) by Jinaprabha Súri in eight languages. ( 5 ) 'Málatimadhava ( VI, 10 ) by Bhavabhūti. (6) Kavyalankāra ( IV, 18, 19, 20 & 23 )* by Rudrața. (7) Caturvimśatijinastavana by Ratnasekhara Gaņi in 25 verses. It is a splendid example of a hymn of which every verse except the last is in Sanskrit, Māgahi and Soraseni. It is published in Jaina.storra-samuccaya ( pp. 107-113). (8) The 74th verse of Devisataka is so composed that it is alike in Sanskrit and five varieties of Prakrit. Hymns having four verses eulogizing (i ) any one or more Tirthankaras specifically, (ii) all the Tirthankaras without mentioning the name of even any one of them, (iii) the Jaina canon and 1 " Bbāşa-sama" is expounded in 50 verses in Bhattikāvya (XIII). 2-3 Both the works are "non-Jaina". 4 These versos serve as illustrations for Ski & Magabi, Sk. & Pesai, Sk. & Soraseni and 8k. & Avabattha respectively.
