SACRED LITERATURE OF THE JAINS. 869 in the Kudugur nad which is in the Punnadu vishaya, has been granted, free of all obstruction, apparently to a Brâhman named Dvivivipra. Also the following grants seem to have been made. The village of Kolar (1. 14), to Sômaśarmabhatta; the said village apparently being his birth-place (janmakshếtra). The village of Kodamaku, to Kumbhasarmabhatta. One share, apparently, of the village of Dvatogeyandr (line 15), to Kamaravarmashadangavid, of the Kaśyapa gôtra, and to Padovasarman of the Atrêya gôtra ; and the text seems to intimate that their birth-place was here, and that the rest of the village belonged to them by right of that fact. The village of Tanagundar (1. 17), to Binammad vivedin, the son of Sridharachauvera. And, apparently, one portion of the village of Pattal to Gananayaka, and the other to Madhavachauvêra, of the Taittiriya charana and the Vatsa gôtra, and to Kéśavakramayita of the Kāņvåyada gôtra. Lines 20 to 28 contain a specification of boundaries, in the course of which there is mentioned the village of Elagovanur (1. 23). But it is not clear whether the boundaries are those of Pungisoge; or of all the villages, on the understanding that they formed one compact block; or of a portion only of the lands that were granted. Lines 28-29 seem to refer to some other grant which was made at the same time, but the nature of which is not apparent. Lines 29-30 state that the witnesses to the grant were the subjects of the Ninety-six-thousand vishaya. And lines 30 to 36 contain a precept in prose, and four of the customary Sanskțit benedictive and imprecatory verses, with which the record ends. WEBER'S SACRED LITERATURE OF THE JAINS. TRANSLATED BY DR. HERBERT WEIR SMYTH. (Continued from p. 184.) As the sixth of the dasdu texts the panhavågaranadas&u are named. This is to be sure the name of the tenth anga, which is also divided into 10 ddras but not into 10 ajjh. The names of the ten ajjh. quoted here show very plainly that here, as in the case of angas 8, 9, the author had quite a different, and in fact an older, text before him than the one we now possess. These names are in agreement with the name of the anga itself, whereas our text of this anga shows no connection with it. The names are : uvamá, samkhá, isibhásiyáini, ldyariyabhásiydin, Mahávirabhásiydin, khômagapasiņáin, kómalapasindirn, addágapasináin, aingut. thapasiņdin, báhupasiņdin. The names of ajjh. 6, 8, 9, 10 recur in that table of contents of anga 10 which is found in anga 4 (and Nandi) so that there the text which existed at the period of anga 3 and not our present text, is meant. Abhayadôva says, in so many words: prasnavyákaranadaćá iho 'ktarúpa na drisyanté, drisyamánds tu paíchásravapainchasaravarátmika iti, ihoktdnáma tú pamadinám adhyayandnám aksharúrthah [273] pratiyamana évé ti. The names of the following four dasku do not recur elsewhere. The names of the 10 ajjh. of dasd 10 are mentioned, not as parts of the Siddhanta but as belonging in or to it. In the seventh place appear the barndhadasdu, the 10 ajjh. of which have the following names : bandhés ya mokkhé ya deviddhi Dasäramamdale ti ya Syariyavipadivatti uvajjhdyavippadivatti | bhávand vimotti sásate kammé. In the eighth place we find the dëgiddhidasuri (dvigriddhi) with the following namest váté vivdte sukhette kasino ti ya 1 bdyálisan suviná tísanii mahdsuviná hárés Rámaguttê ya éyam éé dasa dhiyd. In the ninth place the diha-dasáu with following names : chaude sare ya sukké ya, Siridevi, Pabhavail divasamudddvaratti, Bahupatti, Mamdarê ti ya l théré Sambhayavijaê, théré Pamha-ussasanissåsê 11. Abhayadeva points out here some connection with the narakavalika-, or nirayávalikd 1. Those are but nine in a MS. belonging to Sir Mon. Williams, according to Leumann, bávattario Savvasami aro named in tho tenth place. For the dreams of the mahdow vind above, p. 224, algo cited among the anaagapa vittha toxta in the Påk shikas, and in the Vidhipr.
