________________ महाराजा जसवंतसिंहजी का प्रताप और गौरव “A special reason, besides its strategic importance made the kingdom of Marwar a desirable acquisition in Aurangzib's eyes. It was the foremost Hindu state of northern India at this time*. Its chieftain was Jaswant Singh, who enjoyed the unrivalled rank of Maharajah and whom the death of JaiSingh thirteen years ago had left as the leading Hindu-Peer of the Mughal court. If his powers passed on to a worthy successor, that successor would be the pillar of the Hindu's hopes all over the empire and the centre of the Hindu opposition to the policy of temple destruction and Iziya Sarkar's History of Aurangzib, Vol. III, p. 367-368 “the death of Jaswant Singh emboldened the imperial bigot to reimpose the hated Jaziya, or poll tax on non-Muslims" V, A. Smith's Oxford History of India, p. 438. The Maharada of Udaipur, in spite of his pre-eminent descent, was a negligible factor of the Hindu population of the Mugbul world, as be bid himself among his mountain fastness and never appeared in the Mughal Court or camp.
