________________ JULY, 1884.] PAPERS ON SATRUNJAYA AND THE JAINAS. 195 throws them on the image with the Gujarâtî Next he offers naivedya on the Siddhasalya mantra: with the Gujarâtî mantra :प्रणित ध्याने सद्गति होवे पूजाथि केम नवि होय __ हवे नैवेद निवेदना कीजे जिमहलीराय सुमनसभावे दुर्गता पूज्यपंचाशक जोय ॥१॥ भवनिवेद प्रभुमुखे करतां शिवसुख थाम् ।। शतपत्रीवर मोगरो चंपक जाय गुलाब Then follows the Chaityavandana as in the केतकि दमणोबोलसरी पूजो जिन भरि छाब ॥२॥ morning půjd, after which he retires saying, केतार्क जाय ने मालती फुले गुंथी माल ávissahi, "Let me enter' the outer world. Then the lamps are put out, and the temples प्रभुजिने कंठे जडावतां वरिये शिववरमाल ॥ ३ ॥ shut. He throws flowers also on the nine members The evening pújd is a very short one. It above enumerated ; and, if there is a garland, begins between 5 and 6 P.M., when the půjári he puts it round the neck of the image; the after his afternoon meal enters the temple prodhúpa is then presented with the Gujarati nouncing the indispensible nissahi. Music is at this दुर्गंधा दूरे टळे पामे अमरविमान ॥२॥ time played by the Bhôjakas or others in the Next, the dipa (lamp), is presented with the mandapa. The půjári then retires saying, Gujarati mantra : dvissahi.' This concludes the evening pája Every time he comes in or goes out he strikes केवळ ज्ञानपयावरु जेम लहे लोक the ghanta for joy. तेम पूजा द्रव्यदीपनी करता शिव पणु होय ॥१॥ Of the sacred days of the Jainas, the जगदीपक प्रभुदीप जे करतां भावो जेह Chhavvachchari or Pajjushana begins on the अवराणु जे अनादिनुं ज्ञान लहो निजदेह ॥२॥ 12th day of the Krishnapaksha of Sråvaņa and ends on the 4th of the Suklapa ksha of BhaAfter each act of worship with its particular drapad. During the first 7 of these 8 days the mantra, a general mantra is uttered in San- Kalpasútra or sacred code of the Jainas is read skrit: and explained to the Sråvakas by the priests. ओं ह्रीं श्रीं परमात्मने परमपुरुषाय परमेश्वराय The last day is confession-day, when it is अनन्तानन्तज्ञानशक्तये जन्मजरामृत्युनिवारणाय श्रीमत् considered imperative on every strict Jaina to make chhavvachahari or confession to a जिनेन्द्राय जलं चन्दनं पुष्पं धूपं दीपं अक्षतं नैवेद्यं priest; hence this last day is so called from फलं अजामहे स्वाहा.. this. This confession is called Alavana (Sans. After this he waves the chamara before the alapana, to speak, i.e., confess). Alava na or image, fanning it; and then he comes out into confession with them, however, does not conthe mandapa and on the Bhajat (a small low sist of any enumeration of special sins comtable) or bhandar, he makes the akshatapajd as mitted; but the Srâvaka simply mentions the in the morning service with the Gujarati various classes of sins, and asks forgiveness in mantra: the following mantras :अक्षयफललेवा भणी अक्षतपूजा उदार आलोउंआभव पण नविक्षय हुवे राजरीधभंडार ॥ इच्छाकारेण संदिसह भगवन् देवसि आलोउं He then offers fruit (phala) on the svastika | इच्छं ।। आलोएमि जो मे देव सिउं ।। इति ।। with the Gujarati mantra : अथ सात लाखफलपूजाकरतां थकां सफल करो अवतार सात लाख पृथिवि काय ॥सात लाख अप्प काय ॥ फल मागु प्रभुआगले तार तार मुज तार ॥ सात लाख तेउकाय ॥सात लाख वाउ काय ।।दश लाख जसफल ओपम जग नहि पांम्यापछि नहिं अंत प्रत्येक वनस्पति काय ।। बे लाख बेद्री॥बेलाख तेरेंद्री अव्याबाध अचल अरज मागुं शिवअनंत ॥ बे लाख चौरिंजी ॥चार लाख देवता ॥ चार लाख
