પ૪૦ હિન્દુસ્થાનની સંસ્કૃતિમાં ઈસ્લામને ફાળે પ્રથમ જોવાની હકીકત એ જ હોય કે કેઈ ઠેકાણે હિન્દુમુસલ્માનને ઝઘડે તે થે નથી? ત્યાં જ આ જાતની સેવાનું ગૌરવ ઠીક ઠીક સમઝી શકાય છે.
પરંતુ આ ઉદેશની દષ્ટિએ જોવું તે એક વાત છે, ઐતિહાસિક યથાર્થતાની દૃષ્ટિએ જોવું તે બીજી વાત છે. આ બીજી દષ્ટિએ જોતાં, રા.
ન્હાનાલાલના કથનમાં અમને કેટલીક મહત્ત્વની અયથાર્થતા દેખાય છે એ ટૂંકામાં અત્રે નેધવાની અમે છૂટ લઈશું, પરંતુ તેમ કરતાં પહેલાં, હિન્દુ હાઈ ઇસ્લામના ગુણ પ્રત્યે અમે અબ્ધ છીએ એ ભ્રાન્તિ નિવારવા, રા, નન્હાનાલાલને નિબન્ધના પાયામાં રહેલી એક હકીકત-ઈસ્લામના વિજયનું કારણ એમાં અમારી બનતી સંમતિ પ્રકટ કરીશું. કારણ કે વસ્તુતઃ અમે એક હિન્દુ તરીકે નહિ, પણ ઇતિહાસના અભ્યાસી તરીકે રા, ન્હાનાલાલને આ નિબન્ધ અવલોકીએ છીએ, અને તેથી ઇસ્લામમાં તેમ હિન્દુધર્મમાં સમય સમયના ગુણ અને દેષ બંને જોઈએ છીએ. અમને કાલઈલે કરેલી હઝરત મહમ્મદ પયગમ્બરની કદર માન્ય છે અને આરબોના મહારાજ્યના ત્વરિત વિસ્તારનો ખુલાસો કરતાં, મિ. વેલ્સ એમની “જગતના ઈતિહાસની રૂપરેખામાં જે લખ્યું છે, અને જેમાંથી થોડાક શબ્દ રા ન્હાનાલાલે સૂત્રરૂપે ટાંકયા છે, એ પણ માન્ય છે. મિ. વેલ્સે લખ્યું છેઃ
" It prevailed because everywhere it found politically apathetic peoples, robbed, oppressed, bullied, uneducated, and unorganised and it found selfish and unsound governments out of touch with any people at all. It was the broadest, freshest, and cleanest political idea, that had yet come into actual activity in the world, and it offered better terms than any other to the mass of mankind. The Capitalistic and daupholding system of the Roman Empire and the literature and social tradition of Europe had altogether decaved and broken down before Islam arose; it was only when mankind lost faith in the sincerity of its representatives that Islam too began to decay."
