सौमसेनभट्टारकविरचितशौचं च द्विविध प्रोक्तं बाह्यमाभ्यंतरं तथा ।
मृज्जलाभ्यां स्मृतं वाचं भावशुध्धा तथाऽन्तरम् ।। ३९ ॥ शौच दो प्रकारका है। एक बाह्य और दूसरा आभ्यन्तर । मिट्टी और जलसे जो शौच किया जाता है वह बाह्य शौच है और अपने परिणामोंकी शुद्धि रखनेसे आभ्यन्तर शौच होता है ॥ ३९ ।।
अपवित्रः पवित्रो वा सुस्थितो दुस्थितोऽपि वा ।
ध्यायेत्पश्चनमस्कारं सर्वपापैः प्रमुच्यते ॥ ४० ॥ मनुष्य चाहे अपवित्र हो, चाहे पवित्र हो, चाहे अच्छी हालतमें हो, और चाहे सराव हालतमें हो वह पंचनमस्कारके ध्यान करनेसे सर्व तरहके पापोंसे निर्मुक्त हो जाता है ॥ ४० ॥
अपवित्रः पवित्रो वा सर्वावस्थां गतोऽपि वा।
यः सरेत्परमात्मानं स बाह्याभ्यन्तरं शुचिः॥४१॥ तथा मनुष्य, अपवित्र हो या पवित्र हो अथवा किसी भी हालतमें क्यों न हो, परन्तु जो पर माका स्मरण करता है वह अन्तरंगसे और बाहिरसे पवित्र है ॥ ४१ ॥
चुलकं वारिणा पूर्ण मृत्स्नांशकैः सप्तभिः ।
हस्तेनैकेन हस्तस्यैकस्य शौचं पुनः पुनः ॥४२॥ शौच (गुद-प्रक्षालन) कर चुकनेके बाद, मिट्टीके सात भाग कर ले और दाहिने हाथके चुल्लू में पानी लेकर बायें हाथको बार बार-तीन बार धोवे ॥ ४२ ॥
त्रिवारमेवमाशौच्य द्वौ करौ क्षालयेत्ततः।
कटिस्नानं जलैः कृत्वा पादौ प्रक्षालयेत्ततः ॥४३ ।। इस तरह बायें हाथको धो लेनेपर तीन बार दोनों हाथोंको एक साथ धोये । इसके बाद कमर तक स्नान करके पैरोंको खूब अच्छी तरहसे धोवे ॥ ४३ ॥
मृच्छुभ्रवर्णा विप्रस्य क्षत्रिये रक्तमृत्तिका ।
वैश्यस्य पीतवर्णा तु शूद्रस्य कृष्णमृत्तिका ॥४४॥ ब्राह्मणोंको सफेद, और क्षत्रियोंको लाल मिट्टी लेनी चाहिए; तथा वैश्योंको पीली और शूद्रोंको काली मिट्टी शौचके समय काममें लेनी चाहिए ॥ ४४ ॥
