वैसा ही किया भी—वे अब उपवास नहीं रखते थे, अनशन, ऊनोदर, वृत्तिपरिसंख्यान, रसपरित्याग और कायक्लेश नामके बाह्य तपोंके अनुष्ठानको उन्होंने, कुछ कालके लिये, एकदम स्थगित कर दिया था, भोजनके भी वे अब पूरे ३२ ग्रास लेते थे; इसके सिवाय रोगी मुनिके लिये जो कुछ भी रिआयतें मिल सकती थीं वे भी प्रायः सभी उन्होंने प्राप्त कर ली थीं। परंतु यह सब कुछ होते हुए भी, आपकी क्षुधाको जरा भी शांति नहीं मिली, वह दिनपर दिन बढ़ती और तीव्रसे तीव्रतर होती जाती थी, जठरानलकी ज्वालाओं तथा पितकी तीक्ष्ण ऊष्मासे शरीरका रसरक्तादि दग्ध हुआ जाता था, ज्वालाएँ शरीरके अंगोंपर दूर दूर तक धावा कर रही थीं, और नित्यका स्वल्प भोजन उनके लिये जरा भी पर्याप्त नहीं होता था-वह एक जाज्वल्यमान अग्निपर थोड़ेसे जलके छींटेका ही काम देता था। इसके सिवाय यदि किसी दिन भोजनका अन्तराय हो जाता था तो और भी ज्यादा गजब हो जाता था—क्षुधा राक्षसी उस दिन और भी ज्यादा उग्र तथा निर्दय रूप धारण कर लेती थी। इस तरहपर समंतभद्र जिस महावेदनाका अनुभव कर रहे थे उसका पाठक अनुमान भी नहीं कर सकते। ऐसी हालतमें अच्छे अच्छे धीरवीरोंका धैर्य छूट जाता है, श्रद्धान भ्रष्ट हो जाता है और ज्ञानगुण डगमगा जाता है। परंतु समंतभद्र महामना थे, महात्मा थे, आत्म-देहान्तरज्ञानी थे, संपत्ति-विपत्ति समचित्त थे, निर्मल सम्यग्दर्शनके धारक थे और उनका ज्ञान अदु:खभावित नहीं था जो दुःखोंके आने पर क्षीण
