शरीर और शक्तिपर स्वाधीनता रखनेवाले असरका बंद होजाना ही मृत्यु है। मरनेके बाद शारीरिक शक्तियाँ विखर जाती है । मृत्युसे मतलब जीवनका अंत नहीं है; कितु गरीग्से किमी जीवन शक्तिका भिन्न होजाना है। इसीको हम यह कह सक्ते है कि गरीरसे आत्मा भिन्न होगया।
प्रोफेसर हरमन साहब अपनी पुस्तकमे लिखने हे-"जाननवाला मन एक भिन्न पदार्थ है जिसमे स्वाधीन शक्तिये व क्रियाएं होती है। उसका मानसिक प्रवन्ध अपना ही है, वह गरीरमे स्वतंत्र अपनी मौजूदगी रखता है। दूसरे शब्दों में यही आत्मा है।"* तीसरे
