हीन व्यक्तियोपर सांपता है। युद्धको साहस और सद्गुणकी भूमि स्वीकार करना, ऐसा ही है जैसे व्यभिचारको प्रेमकी भूमि कहना। ___टाल्सटायका कथन वडा महत्त्वपूर्ण है, "युद्धका ध्येय प्राणघात है, उनके अस्त्र हं जासूसी, छल, छलकी प्रेरणा, अधिवासियोका विनाग, उनकी सपत्तिका अपहरण करना अयवा सेनाकी रसदकी चोरी करना, दगा और झूठ, जिन्हें सैनिक उस्तादी कहते है । सैनिक व्यवसायकी आदतो में स्व-तत्रताका अभाव रहता है। उनको अनुगासन, आलस्य, अनानता क्रूरता, व्यभिचार तथा गरावखोरी कहते है।"
साधारणतया लोग युद्धकी भीषणताको भूलकर उसके औचित्यका समर्थन कर बैठते है। ऐसोको ड्यूक आफ वेलिंगटनके ये शब्द शान्त भावसे हृदयगम करना चाहिए जिनमे कहा है "मेरी वात मानिये, अगर
