The O 0 T N s common meaning ofthe word Pratima is a symbol or impression. I A O ‘oO E But here it is a measureofideal practice (code ofconduct). In Jain N O M terminology, Pratima is a type of mental restraint (Abhigrah) in T F R O O which the religious practices are followed in a typical mannerfor W IRP OL o self-purification. In every Pratima, a particular practice is aimed T W GR U P at and the entire time is spent in deeply meditating on it so as to O V H makeit well-absorbed in the self. The total numberofPratimas is O Po D IKP eleven. They are observed one after the other. When the Shravak O o KP completes one and steps on to the next, he does not relinquish the RIA O oV restraints observed in the earlier Pratima, but observing the N K P O 0V restraints of earlier Pratima, he undertakes the additional KP DW O restraints of the Pratima he has stepped in. The detailed 0 P AP BY description ofthe Pratimasin their prescribed orderis as under— O 0 L R DW P OL (1) Darshan Pratima—Special code in observance of faith. YO K R PO Darshan means faith or point of view. It is of primary O E R importance that faith should be faultless and pure for self- O ° developmentor self-realisation. BNE O Qo I R Darshan Pratima denotes keeping firm faith in the path O ° N irs enunciated by the completely detached Bhagavan and the O o teacher following five great vows. It further means to always BK O O L meditate on the said code andto try to meticulously practice it. I B R ° The time-period ofthis Pratima is one month. RW O SO T TAN (2) Vrat Pratima—The special restraints relating to vows. RWE TO The second Pratima is Vrat Pratima. When a person having true O N A T O faith, follows the partial vows (Anand) without any partial L B transgression, he is stated to be observing Vrat Pratima.
