भगवती सूत्रम् सः ८ उः १
Q. 9. And how about animals living in water ?
उत्तर ९-गोयमा ! दुविहा पण्णत्ता तं जहा-समुच्छिमजलयर गब्भवक्कंतियजलयर।
A. 9. Gautama ! Two types, viz., those born without mating and those born from the mother's womb.
प्रश्न १०-थलयरतिरिक्ख...पुच्छा ? Q. 10. And of those living on the soil ?
उत्तर १०-गोयमा ! दुविहा पण्णत्ता तं जहा-चउप्पयथलयर परिसप्पथलयर।
A. 10. Gautama ! Two types, viz., the quadrupeds and the reptiles.
प्रश्न ११-चउप्पयथलयर...पुच्छा ? Q. 11. And how about the quadrupeds ?
उत्तर ११-गोयमा ! दुविहा पण्णत्ता तं जहा-समुच्छिमचउप्पयथलयर गब्भवक्कंतियचउप्पयथलयर। एवं एएणं अभिलावेणं परिसप्पा दुविहा पण्णत्ता तं जहा-उरपरिसप्पा य भुयपरिसप्पा य। उरपरिसप्पा दुविहा पण्णता तं जहा-समुच्छिमा य गब्भवक्कंतिया य। एवं भुयपरिसप्पा वि। एवं खयरा वि ।
A. 11. Gautama ! Two types, viz., those born without mating and those born from the mother's womb. So are the reptiles stated to be of two types, viz., those crawling on the belly and those crawling on the arms. Those crawling on the belly may be born either without mating or from the mother's womb. Similar two types with those who crawl on the arms and also of those who live in the air.
