________________ २१८ : जेन और बौद्ध भिक्षुणी-संघ के पश्चात् फिर उनके उद्धार का कोई प्रयत्न नहीं हुआ । इसके अतिरिक्त जैन धर्म की निरन्तरता का एक कारण बदलती हुई परिस्थितियों से समझौता करना भी था । प्राचीन नियमों को आधारभूत मानते हुए भी समय के अनुकूल जैन आचार्यों ने नवीन आचर संहिताएँ प्रदान की । इसके विपरीत बौद्ध भिक्षु समाज से पृथक् रहे तथा निरन्तर बदलती हुई सामाजिक आवश्यकताओं के प्रति उदासीन रहे । वे कुछ विहारों में सिमट कर रह गये थे तथा अपने चरित्र को भी सुदृढ़ नहीं रख सके । यही कारण था कि प्रतिकूल परिस्थितियों में जब उन्हें विहारों को छोड़ने के लिए बाध्य होना पड़ा, समाज के बहुसंख्यक वर्ग ने कोई सहानुभूति नहीं प्रदर्शित की। the state of a laymen was one preliminary and, in many cases preparatory to the state of monk; in the latter respect, however, a change seems to have come about, in so far as now and for some time past, the order of monks is recruited chiefly from novices entering it at an early age not from laymen in general. It can not be doubted that this close union between laymen and monks brought about by the similarity of their religious duties differing not in kind, but in degree has enabled Jainism to avoid fundamental changes within and to resist dangers from without for more than two thousand years, while Buddhism, being less exacting as regards the laymen underwent the most extra-ordinary evolutions and finally disappeared altogether in the country of its origin".-Jocobi, H., Jainism, Encyclopaedia of Religion. and Ethics, Vol. VII, p. 470.
