The Dharm of the Jains is the condition, the sine qua non of the progress of the soul but it helps on such souls as are bent upon movement. Water enables the fishes to move about only if they choose to do so. It is for them to see whether they shall move or stand still. Similarly the soul may select to extricate itself from the whirlpools of life; the Dharma comes to its help. But it may delude itself and covet what drives it in and in. The Dharma is potential steam which has to be worked by the internal driver of the engine to cover the distance between Sansar and unending felicity. Jainism is thus the most libertarian ethics possible.
