________________ 12 impossible, to guess at its exact structure. We get the following data from Kalpalata-viveka wherefrom an attempt may be made to reconstruct the original. But then it would be hazardous to make any definite conclusion with regard to it. (i) We meet with several references to Karikas in Viveka. They are as follows: (a) Viveka P. 2, 1. 1.1 (b) (ibid) P. 2, I. 26.2 (c) (ibid) P. 9, l. 17.3 and (d) (ibid) P. 127, 1. 19.4 These Karikas are borrowed from the works of earlier writers. For instance, the first of the above references to Karikass is to Kavyaprakasa VII 11, the second and tbird to R. K. L. VI. 8 and 19 respectively and the last to Dhvanyaloka II. 3. Thus it may appear that Kalpalata contained Karikas original as also culled from other works, just as SarsvaliKanthabharana of Bhoja does. (ii) The above conclusion is however to be reconciled with several references to Sutras which we meet with in Viveka. They are as follows: (a) Viveka P. 237, II. 10, 11 and 14.1 (b) (ibid) P. 230, 1. 12.8 The Sutras too are not original but borrowed from the works of earlier writers. For instance, the first three of the above references are to Udbhata's Karika in Kavyalamkarasamgraha' and the last to Vamana's K. L.
