ઉપસંહાર “Literature is at once the cause and the effect of social progress. It deepens our natural sensibilities and strengthens by exercise our intellect and capacities. It stores up the accumulated experience of the race connecting Past and Present into a conscious unity and with this store, it feeds successive generations to be fed in turn by them. As its importance emerges into more general recognition, it necessarily draws after it a larger crowd of servitors, filling noble minds with a noble ambition.”

Lord Acton. પ્રથમ ખંડને પૂરે કરતા પહેલાં એ ત્રીસ વર્ષના ગાળામાં, લોક સ્થિતિ કેવી હતી અને તેમના સુધારા, હિત અને ઉત્કષર્થે સમાજમાં કયાં બળે પ્રવર્તતાં હતાં, તેમજ એ હિલચાલમાં એસાઈટીને હિસ્સે કેવા પ્રકાર અને કેટલો હતો તેને અંદાજ કાઢવાને આપણે પ્રયત્ન કરીશું.
એકાદ ઉંચી ટેકરી પર ચઢીને નીચે તળેટીના ભાગપ્રતિ અવલોકીએ છીએ, તે ત્યાંની ચીજો, ઝાડ, પ્રાણી, મનુષ્ય, ઘર, હેલી વગેરે હાના ન્હાનાં પણુ ગ્ય પ્રમાણસર અને વ્યવસ્થિત રીતે સંકળાયેલાં નજરે પડે છે, અને એકજ દષ્ટિપાતમાં સમગ્ર પરિસ્થિતિ લક્ષમાં આવી જાય છે, એવી રીતે સંસાઈટીના કાર્યની પરીક્ષા અને તુલના બરાબર કરવી હોય તે આપણે સમકાલીન સમાજ જીવનને તપાસવું જોઈએ. પૂર્વે તે કેવું હતું અને પછીથી રફતે રફતે તેમાં કેવા અને શા શા ફેરફાર અને સુધારા થતા રહ્યા.
