had fallen in ruins before the Räjivalochana temple was constructed; for the interval between the dates of the two records of the Sõmavamsi and Nala kings is not more than a century at the most.
We do not know what was the capital of these later Nala kings, but it is not unlikely that like the Sõmavambis, they retained Sirpur as the seat of government. In that case they must have employed the artisans of that place to construct their temple at Räjim. And it should cause no surprise if the artisans adopted a plan with which they were familiar. This is probably the reason why there is such a close agreement between the plans of the two temples at Rājim and Sirpur. The tower of the Rājīvalochana temple which, unlike that of the Lakshmana temple, is in the Dravidian style, must have been rebuilt in later times when the original one had fallen down.

It should however be noted that the use of decorative horse-shoe arches is common to the towers of both the temples.
? Mr. Longhurst thinks that the architecture of the temples at Räjim is clumsy, lacks correct proportion and is painfully modern'. Was the tower of the Räjivalochana templo as well as its mandapa reconstructed by Jagapāla in the 12th century A.D. ? It is to be noted, however, that his inscription built into a wall of the mandapa records in line 14 the construction of a prasada (temple) in honour of Rama, though it opens with an obeisance to Nārāyana. Perhaps he did not make any distinction between the two. Even now the image in the temple is popularly believed to be that of Ramachandra. Cousens, however, suggested that the slab was brought over from another temple at Räjim, viz., that of Ramachandra and set up in this one to lend importance to it. See P. R. A. 8.
