________________ 26 THE INDIAN ANTIQUARY [FEBRUARY, 1916 has laid under contribution Patañjali's Mahâbhâshya, Chandravyákarana, JainendraVyâ karana and the Nyása of Jinendrabuddhi. We also read : अष्टावध्यायाः परिमाणमस्थ अष्टकं पाणिनीयसूत्रं । दशकं वैय्या(या)प्रपदीय Amogh. III. 2. 161. Katika IV.2.66. श्रुतपालस्तु महणं मन्यते Amogh. IV, 1,252. ध्यणर्थस्य तो नास्ति भाषाबामिति श्रुतपालः ॥ Amogh. IV,1,263. दशका उमास्था( स्वा )तीयाः Amogh. II, 4, 182. Umânvâti's Tattvartha-sútra has ten chapters and is accepted as an authority by both the Digambara and Svetâmbara communities. The following remarks are most interesting : विशाखाषाढामंधवंडे III, 2, 120. Cf. Panini v,1, 110. विशाखा आषाढ इत्येताभ्यां तदस्य प्रयोजनमित्यास्मिन्विषये अण् प्रत्ययो भवति । ठणोपवादः 1 मंथे संडे चाभिधेये मंथनं मंथः विलोडनं । विशाखाः( खा) प्रयोजनमस्य वैशाखो मंथः । वैशाखाभ्यां (वैशाख्यां) पौर्णमास्यां सर्वे गोमतः सर्वे गोदोहं दधि(धी भूतं शांतमभिवृध्य(जुधार्थ मध्नति मथित्वा गृहदेवताभ्यो बलिमुपहत्या(त्य) अतिथिभ्यः प्रदायावशिष्टं स्वयमुपयुंजते स मंथो वैशाखः । अस्य हि विशाखा प्रयोजनं । आषाढाः प्रयोजनमस्य आषाढो दंडः। आषाठ्यां पौर्णमास्यां वेणुं छित्त्वा सर्वगंधैरनुलिप्य स्वयमनुलिप्ताः सृ(स्रग्विणालंकृताः कुमारकाः तेनागाराण्याभिनति स दंड भाषाढः । तस्य ह्याषाढाः प्रयोजनं ॥ Amogh. III, 2,120. Yakshavarman says: वैशाखी मंथः वैशाख्यां पौर्न()मास्यां मंथः पूजाविशेषः । ............ आषाडी(ढो) वंडः । आषाड्यां(व्यां) पीन( पास्यां क्रीडाविशेषः । Chintamani III.2.120. In my paper entitled Bhâmaha's Attacks on the Buddhist Grammarian Jinendra. buddhi. I have shown that Kumarila has severely attacked the authors of the Kasika for defending Påņini's terms afare and art and that the Nyâsakâra has not heard of Kumarila's criticism, while it is well-known to Haradatta, the later commentator of the Kasika. It is interesting to note here that the Jaina Sakatayana, who has obviously heard of Kumarila's criticism, goes out of his way to defend these irregular compounds जनिक: and सत्प्रयोजक by admitting them into his Amoghavritti, though he is careful to avoid their use in his own Sútras, as will be seen from the following passages : कर्मणि बा च II,1, 48. .....................................अपां स्रष्टा । पुरा भेत्ता । कर्मणीति किं। जानकर्ता। गुणो गणिविशेषकः । Amogh and Chintamani II,1,48. याजकादिभिः II,1,44. .....................आकसिगणोयं । तेन तत्प्रयोजकहेतुस्वेस्वादि सिद्धं भवति || Amogh. II,1,44. The chronological relations between the authors whose works we are speaking of may be indicated thus : Bhartrihari, the author of the Vakyapadiya died A. D. 650. Jayaditya, one of the authors of the Karika died A. D. 661. The Nyasakāra Jinendrabuddhi A.D. 700. Kumârila A. D. '750. Jaina sakatayana, contemporary with Amogha___varsha I. A.D. 814 sJourn.
