________________ NOTES ON GRAMMAR OF THE OLD WESTERN RAJASTHANI haiḍai (P8) <haiya tai (F 715) <Ap. hiaa lau<Skt. * hṛdaya!akam, haûu (Up. 196) <Ap. hûaü < Skt. bhutakaḥ, hiva (Sast., passim) <havi<ehavi (see § 94, (3)). § 51. Metathesis of consonants is in the great generality of cases effected by h, which possesses a strong tendency to be thrown back before the foregoing syllable. The same tendency h already possessed in Prakrit, and several illustrations thereof have been collected by Professor Pischel, § 354 of his Prakrit grammar. In Old Western Rajasthani, however, this peculiarity of h is much more marked, a fact, which is quite consistent with the way in which intervocalic h is pronounced in standard Modern Gujarâti up to this day,20 Examples are: úphara (Âdi. 55) <*úpahara<*úparaha (see § 147), dihalau (P., Yog.) <*dihaa lau<Ap. diahalai <Skt. "divasaṭakaḥ, dohila (Dd.) <*dûlaha <Ap. dullaha-Skt. durlabha-, pahiravaï (Dd. 6)<Ap. parihávaï, °vei <Skt. * paridhâpayati, mehalaï (Bh. 47) <Jaina Mâh. melhaï (see § 42) <Ap. mellaï, khaba 91 vahilu (Yog. i, 55) <Ap. vallahu<Skt. vallabhaḥ, sahamai (F 602) <sâmahaü (Çrâ.)< sâmuhaï (Up. 108) <Ap. sammuhaü <Skt. cammu hrai (Crâ.)<raha! (see § 71, (6)). The reverse tendency seems to have been possessing h when originally initial in a word. This was already the case in Prakrit, as is shown by the examples draha <Skt. hrada, rahassa <Skt. hrasva and luhaï <hulaï, quoted by Pischel, § 354. For the Old Western Rajasthani I may quote: draha (Dd. 8) <Skt. hrada-, and: thai (P. 70) <hatai (see § 113). In Mârwârî we have: vhaï <huvai, 21 Quite exceptional are the forms evahau, kevahau, etc. occurring in Sast. for chavau, kehavaü, § 94, (3). Transposition of consonants dinerent from h occurs in: gama (for gam??) (Mu.) <*mâga (*mg1 ?)<Ap. magga- (maggahi ?)<Skt. mirga-, bhayaga (P. 635) <*bhagaya <Skt. bhagya-. For the metathesis of r in double causals see § 141, (4). (g) Samprasarana. $52. Samprasarana is very frequent in Old Western Rajasthani, both in tadbhavas and in tatsamas. A few examples are the following: abhintara (P. 320) <Skt. abhyantara- (cf. Ardhamâgadhî abbhintara-), gaükha (P. 352, Âdi C.) <*gavakha<Ap. gavakkha- <Skt. gavākṣa-, desâura (P. 142) <Ap. des dvara- <Skt. deçâpara-, dhaülaü (Up. 95) A Ap. dhavalai < Skt. dhavalakaḥ naümaü (Rs. 32) <Ap. navamaii<Skt. navamakaḥ, bhavi (F 535, ii, 21) <Skt. bhavya-, vivahari (P. 41, 44) <Skt. vyavahârin, supana (F 715, i, 19) Skt. svapna-. (To be continued). 29 See LSI., Vol. ix., Part II, p. 330. 1 Cf. Old Baiswart rahasana<harasana (R. O. M. ii, 17).
