________________ Kuyyaka is here mentioned as his preceptor (guru). (The first stanza in the present work.) Here the author of the Vrtti says that the meaning of the Alankārasūtras of his preceptor is explained in the Vrtti. (The last stanza of the present work.) Here the author is specifically mentioned as Mankhuka and his work as Alaňkārasarvasva. The present commentator Samudrabandha would lead us to an entirely different standpoint altogether. He calls the work that he starts to comment upon, Alankārasarvasva and its author Maßkhuka. He also states that this work on poetics is 'originated' by Mankhuka. Thus:(1) "कदाचिन्मख़ुकापलं काव्यालङ्कारलक्षणम् । . He indeed coinment:s on the passage, ___'गुर्वलकारसूत्राणां वृत्या तात्पर्यमुच्यते ।' and explains it गुर्वित्यमेन विवक्षितस्य तात्पर्यस्यावश्यवक्तव्यतां दर्शयति । He would appear not to find any reference to a preceptor in the first work but rather to take it as meaning that which deserves explanation'. Proceeding to comment on Alankārasarvasva, he occa sionally gives explanations of the Sūtra portion as well, and makes it apparent, that he includes both Satra and Vštti in his conception of Alaňkārasarvasva. Besides, where the Vrtti explains the word 'Samkshe. patah' in the Sūtra,
