________________ CHAPTER IV DEVELOPMENT OF PARINĀMA IN THE YOGA-SŪTRAS AND THEIR IMPORTANT COMMENTARIES AND THE SANKHYA-SŪTRAS AND THEIR COMMENTARIES Sources The yoga-works : Indian traditioni identifies Patañjali, the author of the Mahābhāşya with Patanjali, the author of the Yogasūtras. If this tradition can be relied upon, then the date of the Yoga-sūtras, will be the middle of the 2nd cent. B. C. which is the generally accepted date of the Mahabhāșya. But Scholars like Keith and Woods do not subscribe to this traditional view and regard the two Patañjalis as different. Prof. Wood places the Yoga-sūtras in the 4th or 5th cent. A. D. However, they are not later than the 3rd cent. A. D.4 The earliest commentary on the Yoga-sūtra is the Vyāsa-bhāşya (4th cent. A.D.): Vācaspati and Vijñānabhikṣu wrote commentaries on the Vyāsa-bhāşya, called Tattva-Vaišaradī, and Yoga-varttika respectively. Bhikṣu has also written Yogasārasamgrah and Vijñānāmộta-bhāşya, a commentary on the Brahmasūtra. The commentaries of Bhoja (10th cent. A.D.)6 and Nāgesa (17th cent. A.D.)? on the Yoga-sūtras, are respectively called Bhojavștti and Chāyāvyakhya. 1 cf. The commentary of Bhoja on the Yoga-sūtra.
