________________ Pariņāma in the Samkhya-karikā and its Commentaries 35 principles, are designated as vikaras or evolutes only. The Purusathe Subject, the twenty-fifth principle, is neither an evolute nor an evolvent as it is not caused by anything, nor does it become the cause of anything 13 ! The twenty-five principles are also classified as Vyakta (Manifest), Avyakta (Unmanifest) and Jña (the Subject). It is the knowledge of these three that liberates man from wordly misery. 14 Of these three, the Vyakta15 is stated to be caused, non-eternal, non-pervading, mobile (i.e. capable of movement in space),16 manifold, dependent, mergent,17 conjunct and subordinate. The Avyakta is the reverse of this.18 The Vyakta and Avyakta are similar19 in so far as both are possessed of the three Guņas, are indistinguish STK on Ska 10 'लिङ्ग' however is differently explained by Vacaspati as : यथा चैते बुद्धयादयः प्रधानस्य लिङ्ग तथोपरिष्टाद्वक्ष्यति । .... ...' i.e. STK on Ska. 10. Yuktidipika gives the same meaning, Jayamangala notes both the senses, viz. 'mergenti and the mark leading to the inference of Pradhāna’. 18 Note that the reverse of 'सक्रियत्व' in the Avyakta is to be understood in the sense of the absence of 'parispanda' only for "सदशपरिणाम is there cf.
