To a much greater extent than any other country the infliction of pain or the deprivation of Life has been viewed with repugnance in India since the earliest times. Compassion is a normal human attribute and as the need for killing to appease hunger lessened among mankind, the act of killing or the infliction of suffering on living beings itself became painful to contemplate. Compassion or ahimsa scon therefore appealed as a high principle to our earliest. thinkers and Mahavira emphasised it in his teachings. Today we hold the principle of ahimsa high in independent India and try to follow its implications as far as practicable in our relations with men as well as countries. I am glad to know that the Jain Sahitya Prakashan Mandir is publishing a collection of teachings of Mahavira who is among our greatest sages. I wish all success to this endeavour.
