________________ 18 P. 35. L. 16. [arama.] Contemptuously. P. 36. L. 4. अह्निअव्वम् a variant for [अशिदव्वं]-आह्निकद्रव्यम्-eatables for the day. ___P. 36. L. 7-10 (Verse 46). He has been attenuated (impoverished) because of his kindness (liberality) towards us. With his wealth he disgraced nobody. He is exhausted now after quenching thirst of the needy as is a watery tank parched in the hot-season. -[प्रणयैः]-समयोचितदानैः-Timely gifts. Metre वंशस्थम्-प्रथमपादमपहाय. 'जतौ तु वंशस्थमुदीरितं जगौ'. P. 36. L. 12-15 (Verse 47). Is he a hero, a warrior? Or Pandu's son, S'vetaketu. Is he Râdha's son (Karņa), Râvaņa or son of Indra? Oris he born of Kunti by Râma? Is he As'vatthâmâ, son of Dharma (Yudhisthira) or Jatayu ?-श्वेतकेतुः-अर्जुनः शुक्लवानरध्वजः-also the name of a sage figuring in the Upanishads. श्वेतकेतुरौद्दालकिः दुर्वाससो मातुलः ॥ [इन्ददत्ते.] इन्द्रदत्तः a character in the Brhatkatha. इन्दउत्ते इन्द्रपुत्रः, Bali or Jayanta. Rama had no connexion with Kunti. Metre वैश्वदेवी, 'बाणाश्वैच्छिन्ना वैश्वदेवी ममौ यौ'. P. 37. L. 2–5 (Verse 48). He is noble Chârudatta, the desirefulfilling tree for the poor, bowed down by his fruit like merits, kinsman to the virtuous, a mirror for the nurtured, touch-stone for piety, ocean-in-flood of decorum, performer of good actions, scorner of none, treasure of manly virtues, liberal and upright. He only lives in abundance of his good qualities, others, so to speak, breathe merely.-[आदर्शः]=(आदृश्यतेऽत्र दृश आधारे घञ्); A pattern or type. Cf. आदर्शः सर्वशास्त्राणां Kadambari p.b; also cf. गुणानामादर्शः॥[शीलवेलासमुद्रः]=शीलं एव वेला यस्य, समुद्रो वेलामिव सद्वृत्तं नातिकामति.-[निकषः.] निकष्यतेऽस्मिन्निति, सुवर्णकषणोपलः परीक्षास्थानं-A standard.-[उदारसत्त्वः] Of noble character. For एको जीवति etc. Cf. स जीवति गुणा यस्य धर्मों यस्य स जीवति । गुणधर्मविहीनो यो निष्फलं तस्य जीवितं. Metre स्रग्धरा, Rhetorical Figure मालारूपकम्. ___P. 37. L. 11-14 (Verse 49). Like the sight of the blind, the strength of the sick, wisdom of the block-head, success of the indolent, the highest knowledge to the dull-witted and dissolute and love to a foe she is lost to you.-[आतुरः] पीडितः रुग्णः ,-Sick.[व्यसनं] Sensuality. 'व्यसनं विपदि भ्रंशे दोषे कामजकोपजे.'-[परमेव] may be divided into परं and एव. परं-completely or entirely. त्वां प्राप्य त्वत्समीपे. Metre वसन्ततिलकम्, Rhetorical Fig. मालोपमा. P. 37.
