71 वैश्यों को जैनमत में दीक्षित किया।' 1369 ई. के एक शिलालेख के अनुसार महावीर स्वयं अपने जीवन के सैंतीसवें वर्ष अर्बुदभूमि पधारे। बदली के शिलालेख से यह पता चलता है कि राजस्थान में जैनमत का व्यापक प्रचार था। महावीर के निर्वाण के 84 वर्ष की तिथि के इस शिलालेख में एक स्थल मज्जमिका का उल्लेख है। यह वस्तुत: चित्तौड़ के पास का मध्यमिका है, जिसका पंतजलि के ‘महाभाष्य' में उल्लेख है। इस शहर की नींव प्रियग्रंथ ने रखी, जो तीसरी शताब्दी के सुहास्ती का शिष्य था। मौर्यकाल में राजस्थान में जैनमत सम्पन्न था। साहित्यिक प्रमाण और शिलालेख से सिद्ध है कि चंद्रगुप्त जैन था। इसके साम्राज्य में राजस्थान का भी कुछ अंश था। इसने गंगाणी में एक मंदिर में पार्श्वनाथ की मूर्ति स्थापित की थी। जैन इतिहास में अशोक के पौत्र सम्प्राति को जैन अशोक कहा जाता है। यह परम्परा से मान्य है कि उसने राजस्थान, गुजरात और मालवा में अनेक मंदिर निर्मित किये। ग्रीक स्त्रोतों ने माना है कि पश्चिमी भारत में उस समय कई नग्न साधु थे, जो भूखे रहकर मृत्यु को प्राप्त होते थे और उनका समाज में बहुत सम्मान था। कई महिलाएं उनके निर्देश से संयम का जीवन बिताकर धर्म और दर्शन का अध्ययन करती थी। शककाल में भीजैनमत काऊँचा स्थान प्राप्त था। विक्रमादित्य के समय में मालवा गणराज्य दक्षिणी पूर्वी राजस्थान का एक अंग था और जैनमत पश्चिमी भारत में
