________________ Shri Mahavir Jain Aradhana Kendra www.kobatirth.org Acharya Shri Kailassagarsuri Gyanmandir 16 OLD BRĀHMI INSCRIPTIONS 8. Satame' ca vas(e)? (a)si-chata * -dhaja-ra(dha)-rakhitu(ramga) *-sata *-gbațāni savata? saņdasanam & sava!-(mamgalāni) to kārāpayati" [–] sata-sahasehi [.] 1. Prinsep and others read satamam. But the e.mark attached to the final letter of satame is distinct. 2. Prinsep reads tisam ; Cunningham, vesam. I do not find the anusvāra-sign along with the second letter. 3. Prinsep and others read Pasāsato. It is certain that the first letter which is somewhat obscured by fissure is not pa : it is either ma or a, more likely the latter. The third letter is prominently cha. 4. Prinsep reads vajaragharavedham ; Cunningham, vajarighavadhasatima ; Jayaswal, vajira-gharavi-Dhi(si), correcting his former reading jara-ghara khata. Jayaswal finally reads Vajira-ghara-va[m]tigh[u]sitā. 5. Prinsep reads satam; Jayagwal, (Dhi)si ti. The appearance of ra as si may be due to fissure. To me, the reading (Dhi)si is meaningless. 6. Prinsep and Cunningham read gharini. Jayaswal reads gharini, correcting his former reading gharini. None may doubt that the second letter is ta, and not ri. 7. Indraji reads savotu ; Jayaswal, samātu(ka), correcting his former reading savitu. Prinsep and Cunningham correctly read savata. 8. Prinsep reads kahadapana or kahadapamna; Cunningham, kahadapana; Indraji, kula ...... ; Jayaswal, (mâtu)ka-padapuna, correcting his former reading upādapumna. 9. Priusep and Cunningham read nara(pa). Jayaswal reads saku(mārā). Jayaswal finally reads ( ti ?] [ kumāra). 10. Cunningham reads pa ketana. Jayaswal reads the first letter as ma. 11. I have little doubt about the correctness of this reading. 12. The gap must have contained a word denoting a number. For Private And Personal Use Only
