________________ Shri Mahavir Jain Aradhana Kendra www.kobatirth.org Acharya Shri Kailassagarsuri Gyanmandir NOTES 173 the Prologue of the Pali Nālaka-Sutta as found in the Sutta-Nipāta? on one side and Kālidāsa's Kumāra-Sambhava on the other, so with reference to the accidental unconscivus beginning and maturer development of the rhythmical prose style, our old Brāhmi inscriptions represent a link of transition between some of Pāli set formulas of Buddhist precepts and the Milinda's descriptions of the city of Sāyala and the earthquake. The Pāli formulas representing an accidental unconscious beginning of the prose style of Khāravela's inscription are being quoted below : I. Pāli Formulas of Buddhist Precepts(a) Nacca-gīta-vādita-visīka-dassanā-veramaņi (Vinaya Mahāvagga) Nacca-gita-vādita-visūka-dassanā-veramaņi-sikkhāpadam (Khuddaka-Patha) Nacca-gita-vādita-visuka-dassanā-veramani-sikkhāpadam samādi yāmi (Khuddaka-Patha-Comy.) (b) mālā-gandha-vilepana-dhāraņa-mandana-vibhūsana-tthānā veramaņi (Vinaya Mahāvagga] mālā-gandha-vilepana-dhāraņa-mandana-vibhūsana-tthānā-vcramani-sikkhāpadam (Khuddaka-Patha) mālā gandha-vilepana-dhāra na-mandana-vibhūsana-tthūnā veramaņi-sikkhāpadam samādiyāmi (Khuddaka-Pātha-Comy.] 1. We mean that the Sutta-Nipāta contains one of the two versions of the discourse in I ndian languages, the other version being found in the Mahāvasta, III, pp. 386-87. If Dhammananda Kosambi's identification be correct, as we believe it is, this is the very discourse which was recommended for study by King Asok a in his Bhabru Edict under the title "Moneya-Sute." The verses of the Prologue appear to be a supergrowth and later addition. As to the relation between the Pāli Prologue and the Buddhacarita, the follow. ing quotations will suffice :(4) Pāli PrologueDadallamānam siriya anomarannam dassesi puttam A sitaphayassa Sakya. Disvä kumāram sikhim iva pajjalanttam tārāsamam da nabhasigamam pisuddham. (b) Buddha-Carita, III, 23 :Dretvà ca tam rajasutam striyastā jājvalyamānam vapugā óriyā ca.
