INSCRIPTION OF NĀKIYA

Mahāmadasa · Bāriyāya ? Nākiyasa : leņa[m] * [.]
1. Prinsep reads Māpāmadati; Cunningham, Mapāmadāsa; Laders, Mahāmadasa ; Banerji, Mahāmadāsa. Banerji is of opinion that the à in dā is superfluous. I think that the ā-stroke is an appearance rather than a reality.
2. Prinsep reads bākāya (Ya); Cunningham, bāniyāya ; Lüders, bariyāya; Banerji, too, bāriyaya, treating it as a mistake for bhariyāya. I take Bāriya to be the name of a locality, the native place of the donor, or the name of a lady donor.
3. Princep reads (Ya)nākiyasa; Liders, Nākiyasa, Cunningham and Banerji correctly read Nakiyasa. Näki, according to Lüders, or Nakiya, according to Banerji, is the name of the wife of Mahamada. Had it been so, there would have been a feminine Genitive case-ending āya in the declension of Nāki or Näkiya. But we have, instead of Nākiyāya, a masculine Genitive form Nākiyasa. I take Nākiya to be the name of the donor, Bāriya to be his native place, and Mahamada to be his official designation, or all the three of them to be personal names.
4. Prinsep wrongly reads long.
