Even then, it seems that for practical purposes, it believes in the existence of Self as the doer of actions and the enjoyer of their fruits. It holds the Self responsible for certain actions, and thus, one is compelled to experience their corresponding fruits. It is clearly stated in the Dhammapada by Buddha - “By Self alone is evil done, By Seif is one disgraced; By Self is evil left undone By Self alone is he purified Purity and impurity belong to the Self No one can purify another.” 1 Thus, the Buddhists hold firmly that one's Self is responsible for the performance of good and bad actions, and that he has to necessarily reap the fruits of his own deeds. According to it, one cannot escape the fruits, either agreeable or bitter, of his actions. It is strange and absurd that the non-believers in Self should speak in terms of the doctrine of Karma, for the doctrine of Karma necessarily implies the presupposition of a persistent living Self, passing from one birth to another to experience the results of actions performed in the preceding births. Although Buddhism believes that everything is only evanescent and ceases to exist during the same moment in which it is born, they also believed in the absolute power of Karma energy which determines the form 1 Edmunds A.
