was modified, and since 1956 this matter is spread over two other Volumes XIX and XX.
The Jaina Literature is very vast, varied and valuable. It can be divided into various groups, some of them being as under :
(1) Canonical and non-canonical. (II) Secular and non-secular. (III]) Śvetāmbara and Digambara. (IV) Sanskrit and non-Sanskrit.
Vol. XVII deals with the canonical literature whereas the subsequent Vols. XVIII-XX with the non-canonical one.
The Jaina Mss. embodying the secular literature of the Jainas are excluded from the Jaina Catalogue. Hence all the Vols. XVII-XX furnish us with the non-secular i.e. religious and philosophical literature of the Jainas.
As most of the orthodox Digambaras believe that the Jaina canon is extinct, Vol. XVII dealing with the canonical literature includes only the Svetămbara works. Same is the case with Parts II & III of Vol. XVIII, Pt. I of Vol. XIX, and Parts I & II of Vol. XX. Part IV of Vol. XVIII and Pt. III of Vol. XX represent Digambara works only. Parts I & V of Vol. XVIII, Pt. II of Vol. XIX and Pt. IV of Vol. XX include works of both the sects of the Jainas.
The fourth group is out of question as the Jaina Catalogue is not divided according to languages.
It is a matter of great pleasure to me to mention that the publication of this Part II marks the end of Vol. XIX of which some sheets were prepared by me as far back as 1930 and none later than 1936. As regards the item viz. "reference ", a few additions have been made at times especially in connection with publications of works issued during all these years.
The printing of Vol. XVII commenced in 1333 got completed in 1954 when its last ( fifth ) part was issued. Vol. XIX was sent to the press in December, 1952, and it is now ready for publication.
