________________ Rajasthan Oriental Research Institute, Jodhpur other similar works from the Jaisalmer collection are also under publication, which are pledged to add a lot to our information about the medieval Sanskrit, Prakrit and allied literature. Seven branch offices of the Institute have been established at Jaipur, Kotah, Alwar, Tonk, Udaipur, Bikaner and Chittorgarh. The Government have handed over all the manuscripts lying in the various libraries and museums to the Institute for preservation and proper use. Large number of manuscripts have been received by donation, and in this respect the Bikaner branch has made a history, where an attractive number of about 21,000 valuable Mss. has been received. Branch offices at Jaipur, Alwar and Chittorgarh have also gained by such donations. The survey work is proceeding in accordance with the prescribed proformas with a view to derive maximum information from the collections owned by private institutions and individuals. The total number of Mss. preserved in these branches is nearing about 55,000. These collections abound with hundreds of extensively illustrated manuscripts comprising thousands of genuine miniature paintings possessed with brilliance, col. our sheme and forth-right expression, sanctity of theme and poetic fervour-the chief characteristic of the various schools of painting which developed in Rajasthan during the ancient and medieval peri ods. The collection of illustrated manuscripts in the Saraswati Bhandar of Udaipur is unique in that the Maharanas of Udaipur patronised the art of painting by getting illustrated manuscripts prepared on the classical and poetic themes.. The Institute is alive to the need of bringing out valuable publications based on the rare and rich materia preserved in these collections. The Institute occupies a prominent place among the other siste Institutes in the country and abroad. All such centres of Oriental learning and culture have to play a vital role in the bringing out of the Asian heritage, in general. Jain Education International MUNI JINAVIJAYA Hon.
