________________ [6 ] ages dealing with Oriental subjects e. g. Vedas, Brahamanas, Upanishads, Vedanta, Darshan, Jyotish, Nyaya, Vyakaran, Kavya Nataka, Champu, Chhandas, Katha-akhyayika, Kamsastra, Ayurveda, etc. are at present in the charge of the Institute. Some of them are very rare and as old as the 11th Century. Besides, the collection abounds with hundreds of extensively illustrated manuscripts comprising thousands of genuine paintings possessed with the chief characteristics of the various Rajput schools of painting which flourished during the medieval period. Vast collections of equally rare and rich material are really far and few. Large amount, skill, time, and patience will be needed to bring out descriptive reproductions of these illustrated manuscripts. With the establishment of the Institute, a great wealth of the country has been saved from deterioration due to the effects of weather, destructiue insects, and unscrupulous use by the owners out of ignorance. There is a reference library for the use of scholars containing about 8,000 volumes of rare and old books. The Institute has not remained behind in bringing out useful publications during the span of last 12 years. Under the series 'Rajasthan Puratan Granthmala' 57 work have so far come out and 33 are under print. These works have been highly spoken of by eminent scholars in the country and abroad in that they supply a wealth of information on many facts related to history and culture. The Institute is also taking part in the scheme for Development of Modern Indian Languages - Rajasthani' and 'Preparation and Publication of catalogue of Sanskrit and Prakrit manscripts' as also bringing out of important, old Sanskrit and Prakrit Texts' sponsored by the Govt. of India. Only recently, a scheme for the preservation and publication of important manuscripts in the Jain Grantha Bhandars at Jaisalmer, has also been taken up by the Institute. The Late President and the Prime Minister both, after visiting Jaisalmer, had expressed their wish for the preservation & necessity of a proper study of these manuscripts. Consequently, the Government of Rajasthan took up the task through Jain Education International For Private & Personal Use Only www.jainelibrary.org
