________________ xi commentator, says that it was due to the author's reading by a mistake bālaputra in Dhanvantari's text instead of bālapatra.1 It would appear from the above that in the opinions of Sarvananda and Kṣīrasvamin, Vyaḍi, Vararuci, Bhaguri and Dhanvantari among the authors and the Trikanda, the Utpalini, the Ratnakosa, and the Mālā among the works preceded Amara and his work. Katya or Katya yana and Vacaspati, too, who have been referred to in the same breath with Bhaguri and Vyāḍi by writers like Purusottamadeva, Maheśvara," and Hemacandra,* appear to have preceded Amara. There is a couplet at the end of Purusottamadeva's Haravali which may be construed to mean that Sabdarṇava, Utpalini, and Samsarā varta are respectively the kosas by Vacaspati, Vya ḍi, and Vikramāditya Rayamukuta on Am. I. 1. 22 quotes a passage from the Sabdarṇava which Ramanatha in his Tríkāṇḍaviveka ascribes to the Vacaspatikoṣa. Amarcandra in his Kavyakalpalatāparimala cites twice from the Utpalini with the words Vyadikṛtotpalinīmadhyāt.
