મેટેફર (Metaphor)-ઉપચાર qualities are given by metaphor's inter-active function, a form and an integrity, a whole and an oder. In this sense, man's reality is formed by the metaphorical processes that inform his language.” - આ છે કાવ્યમાં, કાવ્યર્થમાં, કાવ્યવ્યંજનાની સિદ્ધિમાં ઉપચારનું પ્રદાન. કાવ્યના આ અતિ અગત્યના અલંકારણને સુભગ, સુંદર અને સહજ પ્રયોગ ભાવપ્રધાન કવિતામાં, રોમેન્ટિક કવિતામાં, રહસ્યપ્રધાન કાવ્યમાં, નાટકોમાં અને પ્રાયઃ તમામ પ્રકારનાં કાવ્યોમાં કાવ્યચારુત્વના અતિ મહત્ત્વના આધારરૂપ છે. ઉપચારથી કાવ્યવ્યંજના કાવ્યર્થ અને કાવ્યસૌન્દર્યને સિદ્ધ કરે છે. મોટે ભાગે ઉપચાર સ્વયં કાવ્યર્થ નથી, સ્વયં વ્યંજના, હમેશાં હેત નથી. જો કે તે સ્વયં કાવ્યર્થ કે કાવ્યચારુ કે કાવ્યવ્યંજન ન જ બની શકે એવું પણ નથી. કાવ્યમાં ઉપચારના આ અતિ વ્યાપક પ્રભાવની પાશ્ચાત્ય વિવેચનની મીમાંસા સંસકૃતનાં શ્રેષ્ઠ કાવ્યોની વ્યંજનાના નવા જ સંદર્ભમાં આસ્વાદનમાં પ્રેરક બળ બની શકે તેમ છે.
