तक वहाँ तक भी होता है ।" हिन्दू बीजगणित में इस पारिभाषिक शब्द का बड़ा महत्व है. इस शब्द का उद्भव या तो यदृच्छा अर्थात् विवक्षित राशि से अथवा वाच्छा ( अर्थात् इच्छित ) राशि से हुआ है ? वक्षाली हस्तलिपि में इसका प्रयोग कूटस्थिति नियम को ध्वनित करने हेतु हुआ है । यह भी सुझाव प्राप्त हुआ है कि इसका सम्बन्ध अनिर्वृत ( Indeterminate) अथवा अपरिभाषित अथवा अपरिभाषित इकाइयों की राशि से भी है। इस प्रकार जावं तावं से एक यह अर्थ भी ध्वनित होता प्रतीत होता है कि कोई भी संख्या को परिमित सीमा से लेकर उत्कृष्ट संख्येय तक ले जाते हैं। तो जघन्य परीत असंख्येय के केवल एक कम होता है ।
आयंगर (१९६७) भी इस शब्द की व्याख्या करते समय जटिलता का अनुभव करते हैं वे लिखते हैं कि
The Word Yavat Tavat is the word for the unknown quantity in ancient Hindu Mathematics and provides the algebric symbol Ya(41). It is difficult to account for this except by saying that it means the Science of Algebra in however redimentom form it may have existed. Besides the problem on indices in a general form. This subject may have included solutions of the problems of Arithmetics by assumi g unknown quantities simple Summations. *
अग्रवाल ने अपने शोध प्रबंध में इस गाथा के ९ विषयों की विवेचना तो की है किन्तु यावत् तावत् को स्पर्श भी नहीं किया । आखिर क्यों ?
दत्त महोदय ने इस गाथा के प्रथम ५ शब्दों की अभयदेवसूरि द्वारा दी गई व्याख्यायें कतिपय संशोधनों सहित स्वीकार कर ली किन्तु बाद के पाँच शब्दों जावतावति वग्गो, घणोवग्ग वग्गो एवं विकप्पोत की व्याख्याओं को पूर्णतः निरस्त करते हुए लिखा है कि

दत्त महोदय ने इस शब्द की व्याख्या करते हुए आगे लिखा है कि
:
I venture to presume that the term Yavat-Tavat is connected with the rule of False position which in the early stage of Science of Algebra in every country, was the only method of solving linear equations. It is interesting to find that this method was once given so much importance in Hindu Algebra That the section dealing with it was named after it.
