વર્ણવ્યવસ્થા જન્મથી કે કર્મથી? '
અર્થાત બ્રાહ્મણ નહિ પણ બ્રાહ્મણકાર રમકડું–બ્રાહ્મણભાસ.
જાતિ ઉપરથી ગુણકર્મનું અનુમાન કરવું રા. જિજ્ઞાસુ વાજબી ગણે છે. પરંતુ આ અનુમાનનું યથાર્થે જાતિમાં સર્વ હોય ત્યાં સુધી જ સંભવે છે એ ભૂલવાનું નથી. એનિ બેસંટનું કહેવું માન આપવા જેવું છે કે જાતિ ઉપરથી ગુણકર્મનું અનુમાન કરવું તે કરતાં ગુણકર્મ ઉપરથી જાતિનું અનુમાન કરવું વધારે એગ્ય છે. ઉપનિષમાંનું સત્યકામ જાબાલનું પ્રખ્યાત આખ્યાન પણ આ પ્રસંગે સ્મરણમાં લેવા જેવું છે.
આ સિદ્ધાન્તો હવે વિચારદશામાંથી આગળ લઈ જઈ આચારદશામાં ઊતારવાનો સમય આવ્યો છે એટલે આ વિષે અધિક વિસ્તાર કરવો અમને અરુચિકર લાગે છે. અને અમારે કહેવું જોઈએ કે હજી સુધી પણ વર્તમાન જાતિભેદ નિર્જીવ અને અનિષ્ટ છે એ સત્યના સમર્થન માટે “અનેક દષ્ટિએ અવલોકન” કરવાની જરૂર રહેતી હોય તો એ ખરેખર બહુ આશ્ચર્ય અને ખેદની વાત છે. આશા છે કે આટલા જ ટૂંકા પણ કાંઈક દિગ્દર્શક ઉત્તરથી રા. જિજ્ઞાસુને સારી રીતે સંતોષ થશે કે ઉપર બતાવ્યા
** Suppose a Brahman Soul-I mean a highly developed, a spiritual Soul is seeking incarnation, and comes to India and searches for a Brahman's family, and finds the Brahmans ignorant of Sanskrit, of the Vedas, and of the real meaning of the Shastras, and finds with them the outer appearance and no inner reality; and suppose he finds the inner reality in some other caste or even in some other race ? Suppose in a Shudra family he finds men and women who are pious, religious, who lead noble, pure and useful lives; it may well be that the Brahman Soul takes on the outer degradation of the body, prefering the degradation of the physical to the degradation of the spiritual. For what is a Real Brahman? A Brahman Soul or a Brahman Body? –
સારાંશ:–“એમ ધારે કે એક બ્રાહ્મણ જીવ અવતરવાનો છે; હિન્દુસ્થાનમાં સર્વત્ર બ્રાહ્મણેમાં અજ્ઞાન છે, અને શુદ્ર વર્ણમાં વા અન્ય પ્રજામાં વિદ્યા છે; હવે કહે કે એ જીવ ક્યાં અવતરશે ? એ બ્રાહ્મણદેહ પસંદ કરશે કે બ્રાહ્મણજીવ ? ખરે બ્રાહ્મણ કેણુ? બ્રાહ્મણદેહ કે બ્રાહ્મણછવ?
