To mitigate the effect of the sin he had to perform the Upahavya rite to get rid of the sin. In this matter, Angirasa is of opinion that in case of intentional sin, the penalty is double.2 Various Prāyaścittas are prescribed in the Sástras. Some are named and described here. Aghamarşara:it removes all sins. The hymn is to be recited thrice in the day being immersed in water for a bath. This brings the same result as bath after Aśvamedha. According Yajñavalkya, 4 aghamarşaņa hymn is to be recited for three days. According to Prāyaścitta-Sāra,5 three days' fast is prescribed in accordance with Aghamarşapa Vrata. The sinner has to stand up by day and sit up by night. At the end a milch cow is to be donated. Kịcchra-Numerous penances go under this name in its varieties, viz. Kṛcchra-Samvatsara, Atikrochra, Āgneya Kịcchra, Ardhakṛcchra, Jalakrcchra, Tapa Kșcchra, Tilapuruşa Kșcchra, Dadhi Kịcchra, Dhanda Kịcchra, Devakscchra, Patrakṣcchra, Pādonakịcchra, Balakṣcchra, Mohatapatakịcchra, Maitrakịcchra, Yājñakịcchra, Vyāsakịcchra, Suvarnakịcchra and SaumyaKrcchra.
