________________ NAYA-KARNIKA. of a thing are those which really constitute its nature. The Rijusůţrn and the succeeding three nayas, viz., Sabdn, Samabhiridha and Evambhůta take cognizance of the fourth, or the bhara nikesepa only. They only stndy the real, natural aspect of things, and attach no iniportance to the unreal, attributed state, viz., name, shape-image, or causal antecedents. The Naigama, Sangraha, and Vyavahâra however, recognise all the aforesaid 'modes. or niksepas. T'he Characteristics and Instances of the Verbal (Sabda) standpoint. अर्थ शब्दनयोऽनेकैः पर्यायैरेकमेव च । मन्यते कुंभकलशघटाघेकार्थवाचकाः ॥१४॥ Artham Sabdanayonekaiḥ paryâyairekarneva cha, Manyate kumbhakalasagliatâdvekârtha vâchakâh..--14. [w sense ; Teath the verbal standpoint ; w : many; nofa: by synonyms ; of one ; an only; 9 and ; taera treats ; कुंम ajar ; कलश a jar'; पट n jar; प्रादि etc.. स्कार्थयाचका: signifying the same sense.] The Sabda Nayn treats synonymous words as all having the same sense, for instance, kumbha, kalaša, ghata, etc., are all expressive of one and the same object (viz., a jar). 14.
