________________ RULES FOR YATIS. 111 best knows the state of the place, the constitutions of the persons, and what other matters require attention. After he has collected his dinner he is also to ask leave before he partake of it. In like manner he is to ask permission before taking medicine. He should also ask before performing any religious rite, or entering on any course of austerities. Nor especially is the ascetic who keeps the lenten rest permitted without leave of the superior to enter on the performance of the Sauleshaná rite, in which, while absorbed in meditation, and neither eating nor drinking, he comes to the last stage of his earthly pilgrimage, like a tree dropping its leaves in the proper season, wholly unconscious of the fact. It is also prohibited without such leave, to go out for sweetmeats and digestives, or to read the sacred books, or to watch during the night for the performance of religious duties. 18. It is not permitted any one, whether singly or in company with another, to go out to get clothes, a vessel, a blanket, shoes, or any article of clothing, to protect him from the sun or weather, without first obtaining leave to do so, nor to go out, whether to ask alms of householders, or for recreation, or to visit the temples of the sages, or for the necessities of nature, or for meditation.
