He is called Mahávíra because he conquers the passions, and thus shews himself possessed of true heroism; and he is named Bhagaván because he is worthy of divine honours." The father of the Ascetic Lord had also three names, Siddhártha, Sriyánsa, Yasasvi; and his mother also, who was called Trisalá, Videhadinná, Pritikárani. His eldest paternal uncle was named Supársva, and his eldest brother Nandivarddhana, and his sister Sudarsani. His wife was named Yasoda. He had a daughter who had two names, Seshávati and Yusovati.
