________________ DRAVYA-SAMGRADA, 5. In works on Jaina Nyâya philosophy, we find that Pramâņa is of two kinds-Pratyakşa (independent) and Parokşa (dependent). Pratyakşa is clear knowledge or cognition that this object is of such and such a character, without depending upon any other kind of knowledge. That cognition, which is not clear by itself, i.e., that which depends upon some other kind of knowledge is Parokya. Pratyaksa or independent knowledge is of two kinds, Sânvyavabârika and Paramarthika. Sânvyavahârika again is of two kinds, riz., Indriya-nivandbana (caused through the senses) and Anindriya-nirandhana (not caused through the senses. The senses recognised in Jaina philosophy are the eye, the ear, the nose, the tongue and the skin. Mind (Manas) is called No-indriya or Anindriyat (Not Indriya). This Sânvyavalârika variety of Pratyakşa is what we have in our everyday life. The processes of Perception and Memory are dependent upon this variety of Pratyakşa only. We shall, therefore, deal with Sânvyavahârika Pratyakşa leaving aside Pâramârthika Pratyakşa *"प्रमाणं द्विधा।" I. 1.9. "प्रत्यक्षंच परोक्ष च।" 1. 1. 10. "विशदः प्रत्यक्ष। 1. 1. 13.
