________________ 33 AN HISTORICAL SKETCH OF JAINISM Dasav 4), after the town of Vaiśālī, in whose sphere of influence he was born?, by the name Vesālıya (Sū I 2, 3 end, Utt. 6 end), and Videha-dinna after his native country (Āyār. II 15, 17; Jinac. 11 0). He is addressed as bhante. Vaddhamāna married Jasoyā, a Kaundinyi?, with whom he had a daughter bearing the name of Anojā or Piyadamsanā She later became the mother of a girl. Her husband is not referred to in the two biographies, but we know, if not from Viy. 461a ff so from the Āvassaya tradition, that his name was Jamālı. His name was suppressed since it was with his son-in-law (who is said to have been also his nephew from the side of sister) that Mahāvīra went through the trying experience of disobedience and heresy which came to be the "first heresy"5 in the history of the Jain church Since his grand daughter is called a Kausiki, the khattıya-humāra Jamālı must have been a Kausika as well $18. Vaddhamāna having kept his promise not to leave his parents as long as they lived and having obtained the consent probably to be given by his elder brother Nandiyaddhana, left his native country at the age of thirty after having arranged the distribution of his property and his heritage in the course of one year. It speaks for his inclination towards asceticism that he did . so at the beginning of the cold season Thirteen months later, i.e. in winter again, he decided to rid himself of his clothes as well?. This was to be the first great step out of Pāsaism which, I JACOBI, SBE 22 Xf 2 In this connexion it may be assumed that he was spoken of as Vesālıya savaya as was the niyantha Pingalaga of Srāvasti (V1y112b, in the comm a fantastic explanation) 3 This doubtlessly underlies the Kodinna of the texts Comp also Ajjava Kodinna Samaräicc with Arjava Kaundinya Samarādityasamkscpa 1,65 4 For the following see LEUMANN Ind Stud 17,97 ff 5 Out of 7 referied to by Thãn 410a and the Avassaya tradition, comp LEUMANN's essay, Ind Stud 17, 91-135 These 7 heresies (padayana-ni nhava ) arc more interesting in other respects ( 38 ) that as to the history of dogmatics For Jaināli's heresy sec Viy 461 a ff For the 8th ninhava of the Bodiya Sıvabhūi see § 26 6 This interpretation of samalla-painna implies that they were not willing to let him go Gautama the Sakya paid Icss espect to his father's wish to heep him at home - Another interpretation of s -p would be that he now was in a position of keeping his vow (?) to become a homeless monk 7 As SHAH, Jainism in Northern India, p 25, supposes he did so in a state of trance
