________________ 58 MEDIÆVAL JAINISM Vikramāditya VI who built many basadis in the Belvola country.1 The Western Cālukya dominion lasted in all six long centuries of glorious history. The rulers of this great House had begun to assert themselves somewhere in the fourth or fifth century A.D.; and while they were consolidating their conquests in the south-east, their original enemies the Rāştrakūțas wrested from their hands the north-western portions of the Western Cālukyan Empire. This was in the latter part of the eighth century A.D. For two centuries (eighth till the tenth) the Rāştrakūtas, themselves of Karnātaka stock,2 had put the Western Cālukyas once again completely in the shade. In a.d. 973, however, the Western Cālukyas once again regained their ascendancy and continued to rule for two centuries more.3 But towards the end of the twelfth century A.D., two new powers came to the forefront in the land one of them thoroughly Karnāțaka in stock, the Hoysalas, and the other, the Yādavas or Seuņas, both of whom hemmed in the disputed dominions of the Western Cālukyas, and thereby destroyed the latter who had been for a considerably long time the most potent factor in the annals of Karnāțaka. Of these new royal families, we are concerned here more with the Hoysalas than with the Yādavas who, after having asserted themselves first in the Seuņa country in Central India, pushed their power till in the latter half of the 1.
