________________ 352 LIFE IN ANCIENT INDIA Varadā is the river of Southern India, a tributary to the 'Tungabha dra.924 Varadamama holy place Varadāma was counted among the holy places (See Khandappavāya ; Magadha : Pabhāsa) Varadāma is mentioned as a holy place in the Mahābhājala (III 80.65) ; it was situated near Dvārakā Varană or Varunā—a country It was one of the twenty five and a half Āryan countries with Accha as its capital (See Accha). Vārana (Cālana ?) is mentioned as a gana of the Jain Sramanas in the hulpasūtra (8, p 230). Varanā was known by the name of Uccānagara which is identical with the modern town of Bulancashahai in U P 035 Thc dictionary Fan Fan yu has preserved in account that the monk Fa-chung, during the course of his travels in India 1124-153), passed by the town of Varuld in his journey from Nagai ahāla to Vaidia 926 Even now Bulandashahar is known as Baran l'aranasi- ily Váránasi was the capital of hisi, one of the twenty five and a half Aryan countries.
