________________ INUENITANCE AND PARTITION. . 31 प्रारंभ। BEGINNING OF THE BOOK. पित्रोरुवं भ्रातरस्ते समेत्य वसु पैतृकम् । विभजेरन् समं सर्वे जीवतो पितुरिच्छया ॥४॥ On the death of father and mother, all those brothers get together the patrimony and divide it equally among themselves. But during the life-. time of the father (the brothers take only), according to the desire of the father. ज्येष्ठ एव हि गृह्णीयात्पित्र्यं धनमशेषतः। अन्ये तदनुसारित्वं भजेयुः पितरं यथा ॥५॥ The eldest son alone takes the remaining property of the father. The other brothers, looking, upon him (the eldest son) as a father, should live, in accordance with his wishes. *प्रथमोत्पन्नपुत्रेण पुत्री भवति मानवः । पुनर्भवन्तु कतिचित्सर्वस्याधिपतिर्महान् ॥ ६॥ * ज्येष्ठेन जातमात्र पुत्री भवति मानवः । (मनुस्मृती न० ६, लो० ६,) पूर्वलेन त पुत्रण अपुत्रः पुत्रवान भयेत् । (आईमीती है. पृष्ठे)
