and the result was that all the Rishis in his dominious had to suffer. These Rishis avcrted the hundred and one evils that befel them in consequence of the slaughter, and spread them in the world. Horrible is the consequence of the slaughter of living crcatures?
Gentlemen, it is in his commentary upon this dialogue that Nilakantha mentions that thc Arhatas were taken in by the good Acharana of Rishabha who preached the Daya Maya Dharma in contrast to VamaDeva who recommended that in affliction one might cat thc flesh of a dog
यथा--प्रवाशुन पाम्माणि पे चे, यः पूजयितुं पितृदेव मनुथान ये च भाग्वाणि शुनः, इति श्रुतिम्मृतिभ्यां वामदेवस्य श्रेष्टतम स्वापि बीभत्स प्राचार पापदिख मांस भक्षण रूपः प्रदर्शितः॥
पुराणे वा-ऋषभादीनां महायोगिना माचारं दृष्धा पाहतादयो मोहिताः पाखण्ड मार्ग मनुगता इत्युक्तम् ॥
It is also here that Nilakantha quotes a Smriti saying,
मोक्ष वामजं वायोधियायोप कल्पयेत् ।
"We should sacrifice it fat bullock or a fat he goat in honour of a Vedic," and a Sruti appcaling
"मागा मनागामदितिं वधिष्टाः" "Don't kill the guiltless cow."
Nilakantha observes that the Sruti 15 stronger than the Smriti, becausc the word "guiltless" occurs therein.
