________________ THEORY OF ATOA Sound is an attribute of certain kinds of material aggregates. It is not non-material because it is subject of the sense of hearing viz the ear. Whatever can be perceived by the senses must be material (Pudgala) Sound is of two kinds, Prayogik (forced) for which an effort is required, and Vaisrasika· (natural or spontaneous) for which no effort is made. Prayogik is again of two kinds: linguistic and non-linguistic. Linguistic is that which has a Lteral meaning. Non-linguistic is that sound which does not represent any language. It is of four kinds viz. Tat the sound of a drum etc. Vitat--the sound of a violin etc. Ghana-the sound of a bell etc. Sushir-the sound of a flute etc. Vaisrasika or spontaneous sound is the natural sound produced by Thunder etc. The following chart gives the different kinds of sound: SOUND Forced (made with effort) Natural (spontaneous) Languistic met Non Imguistic Vitat Ghana Shushir ,
